The North East is poised to make history, with all eight states now likely to become the collective National Games host for the 39th edition in 2027. A unique proposal for a co-hosting model has received unanimous backing from the region’s top sports officials in a landmark meeting.
The groundbreaking plan was the focus of a Shillong meeting on July 26, where sports ministers, secretaries, and Olympic association members from across the region gave their full support. The meeting was chaired by Meghalaya Sports Minister Shakliar Warjri and co-chaired by his Arunachal Pradesh counterpart, Kento Jini.
Unanimous Backing for National Games North East Host Plan
This move towards a united front is a massive step forward. The plan would see Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Mizoram, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Sikkim, and Tripura join forces to deliver the national sporting spectacle. If approved, it would be the first time the Games return to the region since Assam hosted in 2007.
The proposal is especially significant as Meghalaya was originally slated to be the sole host. Embracing this larger vision showcases a powerful commitment to regional cooperation, with all states ready to share the responsibility of being the host for the 39th edition of National Games.
A Proposed Model for Regional Growth
According to John F Kharshiing of the Meghalaya State Olympics Association (MSOA), “The proposal came from the Ministry of Home Affairs, and the Meghalaya government accepted it, considering that it will promote regional cooperation.”. Kharsing further added in his comments to PTI that ” this proposal celebrates the rich sporting potential that the North East has always exemplified.”
The plan aims to significantly boost youth engagement and fast-track the development of sporting infrastructure across all eight states. While the final approval is awaited, the stakeholders are set to reconvene soon to finalize logistical details. This unprecedented unity has created strong optimism that the 39th National Games will indeed be held across all eight states of the North East indeed.
