The Durand Cup Kokrajhar opening was nothing short of spectacular, as over 14,000 fans created an electric atmosphere at the SAI Stadium on Sunday. Asia’s oldest football tournament began its 134th edition with a powerful display of military precision, vibrant culture, and pure sporting passion, marking a proud moment for Assam and the Bodoland Territorial Region.

The ceremony was a grand affair, graced by Indian football legend Sunil Chhetri, former Bhutanese Prime Minister Dasho Dr Lotay Tshering, and Bodoland Territorial Council Chief Executive Member Pramod Boro. The crowd was left spellbound by an aerial display featuring Su-30 jets and Prachand helicopters, while a hot air balloon ascent added to the magic in the sky.

A Star-Studded Durand Cup Kokrajhar Opening

On the ground, the event was a true celebration of the North East’s rich heritage. The stadium came alive with traditional and fusion dances, including Bagrumba, Bihu, and Bardai Sikhla, performed alongside the powerful beats of the Indian Armed Forces’ Pipe, Brass, and Jazz Bands. Furthermore, performances of Bhangra, Chhau, and a thrilling Kalaripayattu martial arts showcase highlighted the nation’s diverse culture.

Adding to the sense of occasion, the three historic trophies—the Durand Cup, the Shimla Trophy, and the President’s Cup—were brought onto the field with full military honours. The patriotic spirit soared with a rousing rendition of “Assam Badluram,” which had the entire stadium joining in.

Kokrajhar’s Growing Football Legacy

For the third year in a row, Kokrajhar is hosting this prestigious tournament, cementing its place as a key football hub in the country. The passion was evident as the opening match between ITBP FC and Karbi Anglong Morning Star FC kicked off to a deafening roar from the packed stands.

Meanwhile, the Indian Army used the massive platform to engage with local youth. The Army Recruiting Office, Narangi, set up an information centre to educate aspiring candidates about career opportunities, blending the spirit of sport with the call to serve the nation. This powerful Durand Cup Kokrajhar opening has set the stage for what promises to be an unforgettable tournament.
