Sikkim State Boxing Championship Lights Up Gangtok

The future of Sikkim boxing is on full display as the Sikkim State Boxing Championship kicked off yesterday in Gangtok. Young pugilists from across the state have gathered at the Reshithang Sports Complex for a thrilling three-day event, all vying for glory and a state title.

Organised by the Sikkim Amateur Boxing Association (SABA), the 19th Sub-Junior and 20th Junior Championship runs from July 26th to 28th. The opening day was a massive success, with boxers from Gangtok, Namchi, Mangan, Soreng, Pakyong, and Geyzing stepping into the ring, making it a true statewide spectacle.

Star-Studded Opening Ceremony

The event had a grand opening, with SABA’s Patron and Minister for Roads and Bridges, Shri N.B. Dahal, inaugurating the championship as the Chief Guest. He was joined by several other dignitaries, including MLA Smt. Kala Rai and Dronacharya Awardee Sandya Gurung.

In his welcome address, Arjuna Awardee and boxing legend Jas Lal Pradhan thanked the state government for its unwavering support. He emphasized that this championship is crucial for discovering the next generation of boxing talent from every corner of Sikkim.

Action and Support at the Sikkim State Boxing Championship

The energy inside the complex was electric, with over 32 bouts lighting up the opening day, including a flurry of quarterfinal and semifinal matches across different age groups.

Later in the day, the athletes received a huge boost when Minister for Sports, Shri Raju Basnet, visited the event. He praised the young boxers for their dedication and highlighted the world-class facilities at the Khelo India State Centre of Excellence. He also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting athletes with nutrition programs and stipends, encouraging them to stay focused on their sporting careers.

With two more days of intense competition ahead, the excitement is only building. The finals on July 28th promise to be a can’t-miss event, as new state champions will be crowned, potentially launching the careers of Sikkim’s future boxing stars.
