In a major achievement for the state’s sporting community, 16 taekwondo athletes from Assam have been selected to represent India at the 2026 World Taekwondo Poomsae Championships, scheduled to be held at the Air Dome in Chuncheon, South Korea, from September 16 to 20, 2026.
The announcement was made by the Taekwondo Martial Arts & Sports Association of Assam (TMSAA), which is affiliated with India Taekwondo. The championship will be organised under the aegis of World Taekwondo (WT), the sport’s international governing body recognised by the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
The selection marks one of the largest representations from Assam in the Indian contingent for the prestigious World Taekwondo Poomsae Championships, reflecting the state’s growing prominence in the discipline at both the national and international levels.
The selected athletes will compete across individual, pair and group poomsae events in the cadet, junior and senior categories.

- Group Junior Girls: Dezdimona Pathak, Shyamantika Baruah and Diya Patra
- Group Senior Girls: Benla Kemprai, Pallabi Handique and Hrittika Alamyan
According to TMSAA, the selection highlights the growing presence and consistent performances of Assam’s taekwondo athletes in national and international competitions. The championship will bring together some of the world’s finest poomsae practitioners, providing the Indian contingent with an opportunity to compete at the highest level.
The selected athletes are expected to undergo intensive training and preparation ahead of the tournament as they gear up to represent the country on the global stage in South Korea.
Meanwhile, TMSAA has appealed to the Government of Assam, corporate organisations, and well-wishers to extend financial assistance to the athletes, noting that the players are required to bear their own expenses for transportation, accommodation, and championship registration. The association expressed hope that timely support would enable the athletes to focus entirely on their preparations and deliver strong performances while representing India.
