There will be no room for slow starts in Shillong this season. The Shillong Premier League new format is set to inject a dose of high-stakes drama right from the opening whistle on August 6th, turning every league match into a virtual must-win clash for the ten competing clubs.

The bold move by the Shillong Sports Association (SSA) addresses the challenge of fitting a 10-team league into a packed football calendar. The solution is an intense, single-leg league phase where each team plays the other only once. The club that emerges on top after 45 electrifying matches will be crowned champions of Meghalaya’s premier league.

Breaking Down the Shillong Premier League New Format

The changes don’t end with the league phase. In a move to guarantee a blockbuster finish to the season, the SSA is also introducing the “Shillong Super Cup”. This knockout tournament will feature the top six teams from the SPL.

While the league champion and runner-up will qualify directly for the Super Cup semifinals, the teams finishing third to sixth will have to battle through playoffs. This two-part season ensures that clubs are fighting for glory on multiple fronts, while the relegation of the bottom two teams adds pressure at every position on the table.

Heavyweight Clashes Headline the Opening Week

FIerce Rivals Shillong Lajong FC will lock horns with fierce rivals Rangdajied United in a contest that promises fireworks.

The season kicks off under the floodlights of the SSA Stadium at 5:30 PM, with Nangkiew Irat taking on Nongrim Hills. The action continues the next day as 2024’s runners-up, Mawlai, begin their campaign for redemption against Sawmer.

However, the fixture that has the entire city buzzing is the blockbuster clash on August 9th. Defending champions Shillong Lajong FC will lock horns with fierce rivals Rangdajied United in a contest that promises fireworks. The opening week also marks a welcome return to the top flight for promoted sides Mylliem and Malki.

With this revamped structure, the league’s intensity is set to reach new heights. For the players, the pressure is on from day one. For the fans, it signals the start of what could be the most thrilling and unpredictable SPL season to date.
