Key Achievements of the Department of Sports, Government of Arunachal Pradesh, 2023-24

As the nation celebrates its 76th Republic Day, 2025 the Department of Sports, Govt. of Arunachal Pradesh, proudly highlights its remarkable achievements during the year 2023-24. These accomplishments showcase the state’s growing prominence in the national and international sports arena.

1. Infrastructure Development

  • The high-altitude football stadium in Tawang has been selected by the All-India Football Federation (AIFF) for training national football teams.
  • The Golden Jubilee Stadium in Yupia has achieved the prestigious Class 2 Athletics Facility Certificate from World Athletics, meeting international standards.

2. Chief Minister’s Meritorious Sportsperson Scholarship Programme

The Department launched this flagship program to provide development opportunities for both able-bodied and para-athletes, ensuring equitable support for sports talent across the state.

3. Cash Incentives for Athletes

On August 29, 2024, cash incentives totaling ₹2 crore were awarded to 231 athletes from 15 sports disciplines, recognizing their medal wins at zonal, national, and international championships between 2019 and 2023.

4. Hosts First-Ever Menstrual Hygiene Workshop for Female Athletes

For the first time in Arunachal Pradesh, a menstrual hygiene workshop for female athletes and coaches was conducted by the Department of Sports at the Sangay Lhaden Sports Academy from 11 to 13 November, 2024. This groundbreaking workshop was organized in collaboration with the Simply Sports Foundation as part of their Simply Period Programme. The initiative, which has been empowering female athletes, focuses on menstrual health, nutrition, and sports psychology to enhance athletic performance and promote sustainable well-being.

5. Football Development

A landmark MoU was signed between the Arunachal Pradesh Football Association (APFA) and North East United FC (NEUFC), led by John Abraham’s JA Football Private Limited, to develop football in the state.

6. Recognition of Technical Officials

  • Abraham K. Techi, President of the Arunachal Pradesh Weightlifting Association, became the first IWF-certified Category-I international technical official from the state.
  • Biku Sarita, General Secretary of the same association, achieved IWF Category-II certification, making her the first woman in the state to do so.
  • Sangam Kayang became the first Level 5 national football referee from Arunachal Pradesh, and Koncho Tashi became the first coach in Northeast India to complete the AFC Futsal Level-2 coaching course.

7. International Achievements

  • Ruba Juju won a bronze medal at the Youth Boxing World Cup Adriatic Pearl in Montenegro.
  • Weightlifters Balo Yalam and Bengia Tani won gold and silver medals, respectively, at the Commonwealth Junior Weightlifting Championship in Fiji.
  • Chera Loku clinched a bronze medal at the 4th World Wushu Taijiquan Championship in Singapore.

8. Mount Everest Feat

Miss Kabak Yano became the first Nyishi woman to scale Mount Everest, reaching an altitude of 8,848.86 meters on May 21, 2024.

9. Para-Athletes’ Success

At the first North East Para Games held in Guwahati, Arunachal Pradesh’s para-athletes bagged 53 medals, finishing as the first runner-up.

10. National-Level Sports Achievements

  • Charu Pesi and Golom Tinku won gold in the senior and junior men’s categories, respectively, at the National Weightlifting Championships 2024.
  • The state’s judo team performed brilliantly at the Sub-Junior National Judo Championship 2024-25 in Pune.
  • Wushu athletes dominated the 33rd Senior National Wushu Championship, earning seven gold medals and the overall championship title.
  • The Hand to Hand Fighting Team emerged champions at the 4th National Hand to Hand Fighting Sports Championship, winning 12 medals.

11. National Games Participation and Medals

  • Arunachal Pradesh earned 13 medals (6 gold, 2 silver, 5 bronze) at the 2023 National Games in Goa.
  • 36 athletes from Arunachal Pradesh will compete in 8 disciplines at the 8th National Games 2025 in Uttarakhand.
