Mizoram Launches Empowering Mizoram Sports Program to Nurture Future Olympians

In a significant move to boost sports development, Mizoram’s Chief Minister, Pu Lalduhoma, officially launched the “Empowering Mizoram Sports” (EMS) program on Tuesday at the Directorate of Economics & Statistics Conference Hall in Aizawl. The EMS initiative, part of the state’s flagship ‘Bana Kaih‘ scheme, aims to identify and nurture young sporting talent, with a focus on preparing athletes for national and international competitions, especially the 2036 Olympics.

The EMS program comes with a ₹2.5 crore budget and targets children aged 8 to 15. Its primary goal is to provide enhanced sports training and create pathways for young athletes to compete at the highest levels. The program will prioritize sports with significant Olympic potential, ensuring that Mizoram’s youth are well-prepared for future global events.

Addressing the gathering, Chief Minister Pu Lalduhoma recognized Mizoram’s strong sports culture but acknowledged the challenges the state faces in achieving success at national competitions. “Mizos are passionate about sports, but we need to strengthen our training facilities and infrastructure to unlock their full potential,” said Lalduhoma, a former IPS officer. He emphasized that the EMS program would address this gap by providing necessary training and exposure.

The program will be implemented under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, which will involve communities in supporting the logistical, food, and accommodation needs of the athletes. Minister of State for Sports & Youth Services, Pu Lalnghinglova Hmar, underscored the importance of community involvement, stating that the initiative aims not only to train athletes but also to foster a sense of ownership and responsibility among local communities. “The EMS initiative is about building a sustainable framework for sports development, and the communities must be equally invested in the success of the program,” he said.

The EMS program will begin as a pilot project in selected districts, before expanding across the state. Lalramsanga Sailo, IRS, Secretary to the Government of Mizoram, and Henry C. Lalrawnkima, Secretary of the Mizoram State Sports Council, also spoke at the event, sharing insights into the program’s objectives and structure.

The launch of EMS is a direct response to the need for better sports infrastructure and coaching to help Mizoram’s athletes perform at the national and international levels. Lalduhoma reflected on the challenges of securing medals at the National Games, stating, “Winning medals at the National Games is rare, and qualifying in many disciplines remains a challenge. But we believe that the problem isn’t a lack of talent but a lack of access to proper training. This program will create those opportunities.”

Looking ahead, the Chief Minister stressed that the EMS program is a step toward preparing Mizoram’s youth for the 2036 Olympics. “With India preparing to host the 2036 Olympics, this is a crucial opportunity for our athletes. Our vision is to develop young talent now so they can represent India on the world stage,” he added.

The program’s long-term success is rooted in its community-driven approach, with local participation ensuring sustainability and commitment. State Sports Minister Pu Lalnghinglova Hmar further emphasized that the program aims to identify talent from even the remotest villages of Mizoram. “This initiative is about ensuring that every talented youth has an equal opportunity to excel,” Hmar said.

With the EMS program, Mizoram is poised to create a robust sporting ecosystem that not only develops athletes but also fosters a strong sense of community pride and involvement in sports. As the state looks ahead to the 2036 Olympics, the EMS initiative is set to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of Mizoram’s sports landscape.
