In commemoration of the 9th International Day of Yoga, the Directorate of Youth Affairs and the Directorate of Sports, in collaboration with NYKS and NSSS, organized a highly successful Yoga Competition and Drawing Competition at the esteemed Sangay Lhaden Sports Academy (SLSA) on June 20, 2023. The event, centered around the inspiring theme of “Humanity,” witnessed the enthusiastic participation of talented individuals who showcased their skills and creativity with great passion.

The Yoga Competition brought together aspiring yogis from diverse age groups, who astounded the audience with their exceptional flexibility, balance, and inner peace. Tripura Shines at Under-19 National School Games with Impressive Medal Haul

Tripura has emerged triumphant in the Under-19 National School Games, showcasing outstanding performances and securing a total of one gold, four silver, and two bronze medals. The impressive achievement was announced by Tinku Roy, the Sports and Youth Affairs Minister of Tripura, during a press conference held at the Civil Secretariat in Agartala.

The talented school teams from Tripura participated in 15 different events, which took place across Delhi, Bhopal, and Gwalior. The athletes excelled particularly in the disciplines of Judo and Yoga, where they clinched a commendable number of medals.

Minister Tinku Roy proudly declared, “Our state team has accomplished an exceptional feat by winning one gold, two silver, and one bronze medal in Judo. Additionally, we secured two silver and two bronze medals in Yoga. Furthermore, our state team was honored with the second runner-up title in the yoga category. I am confident that our team will continue to excel in other disciplines in the future.”

The Under-19 National School Games were conducted at three different locations across the country, spanning from June 6 to June 13, 2022. Minister Roy took the opportunity to acknowledge the positive transformation in Tripura’s sports scenario since 2018, with significant developments in sports infrastructure.

“After 2018, the scenario of sports in the state has changed, and sports infrastructure has been developed. However, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, we couldn’t focus as much on sports. Nonetheless, we are taking various initiatives for our athletes and sports infrastructure. Tripura is not lagging behind any other states in terms of sports infrastructure,” expressed the minister.

In addition to the success in the sporting arena, Minister Roy also announced the state’s plans to commemorate the upcoming International Yoga Day on June 21. A grand State-level main program has been organized at the International Fair Grounds situated in Hapania, on the outskirts of Agartala city, to celebrate the occasion. This event will further highlight the significance and growing popularity of yoga in Tripura.

On June 19, Amlan Borgohain, a talented athlete from Assam, achieved a remarkable feat by winning a gold medal in the men’s 200m event during the National Senior Athletics Championships held in Bhubaneshwar. Although he secured the gold medal, Borgohain narrowly missed surpassing the Asian Games standard of 20.61 seconds.

During this event, he excelled in both the men’s 100-meter and 200-meter races, clinching gold medals in both categories. His remarkable timing of 10.50 seconds for the 100-meter race and 21.22 seconds for the 200-meter race further highlighted his extraordinary abilities.

In addition to his recent achievements, Borgohain had made headlines in August of the previous year when he became India’s fastest man at the All India Inter Railways Athletics Championships in Raebareli. Hailing from the village of Meleng in Assam’s Jorhat district, the 23-year-old sprinter showcased his exceptional talent by completing the 100-meter race in an astonishing time of 10.25 seconds. This record-breaking performance allowed him to surpass Amiya Mallick’s national record time of 10.26 seconds, which had been set in 2016. Prior to this feat, Borgohain’s personal best time stood at 10.34 seconds, achieved the previous year.

Arunachal Taekwondo Athletes Radha Bangsia and Rikpy Nyodu Shine in Asian Games Trials

Naharlagun, June 18: Today marked the exciting conclusion of the highly competitive selection trials for Taekwondo (Kyorugi & Poomsae) athletes aiming to secure a spot in the 19th Asian Games 2023. The trials, held at the Sports Authority of Gujarat Sports Complex, witnessed exceptional performances by the participants. The event was organized by the Taekwondo Federation of India, under the supervision of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) and sanctioned by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India.

Representing Team Arunachal Taekwondo, seven talented athletes showcased their skills during the trials. In a historic achievement for the Arunachal Taekwondo Association, Miss Radha Bangsia from Sangey Lhaden Sports Academy emerged victorious, securing the 1st position and earning the prestigious opportunity to represent India at the highly anticipated 19th Asian Games to be held in Hangzhou, China in 2023. Miss Radha Bangsia’s remarkable victory came after defeating the previous Cadet Asian Championship 5th position holder with an impressive margin.

Alongside Miss Radha Bangsia, Miss Rikpy Nyodu from Army Academy secured the 3rd position and will serve as a stand-by participant for the Asian Games. Miss Rikpy Nyodu’s talent was evident as she narrowly lost to Mrunali Harnekar by a mere 0.3 margin.

Both Miss Radha Bangsia and Miss Rikpy Nyodu will undergo rigorous training during the 50-day National Coaching Camp scheduled to take place from July to August at the Sports Authority of India (SAI) in Lucknow. Additionally, they will participate in a 30-day foreign training camp, sanctioned by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports (MYAS) and SAI, along with 30 other athletes.

Likha Robin, the General Secretary of the Arunachal Taekwondo Association, expressed his pride and delight, emphasizing that Miss Radha Bangsia’s selection has created history, marking the first time such an achievement has been made in the Arunachal Taekwondo Association since its establishment in 1984.

The success of Team Arunachal Taekwondo owes much to the dedicated leadership of L. Sokun Singh Sr., Vice-President of the Taekwondo Federation of India, Tarak Dotang, Technical Director of ATA, and Coach Suraj Ai, Kipa Kaha, President of ATA. Likha Robin, General Secretary of ATA, also played a vital role in guiding and supporting the team.

Making good on their near-miss four years ago, Rangdajied United FC got their hands on the Meghalaya State League 2023 trophy by beating a spirited Khliehmawlieh Youth Club 1-0 in the final at the SSA Stadium here today to bring the curtains down on a memorable tournament.

The only goal of the game came in just the ninth minute off the boot of Wanlamsuk Nongkhlaw in front of a packed stadium brimming with supporters for both sides who made the action all the more thrilling. Rangdajied United seized the opportunity when Khongsdam received a throw-in from Apborlang Kurbah on the edge of the box. Khongsdam skillfully maneuvered past his marker and delivered a precise cross to Nongkhlaw, who made no mistake in finding the back of the net with a powerful left-footed strike. The goal sent the Rangdajied supporters into jubilation and set the tone for an intense battle on the field.

Khliehmawlieh’s fans never lost hope, though, as they knew their team could deliver a comeback, as they had done against Mawlai earlier in the week. The team began to lift their game towards the end of the first half, demonstrating their resilience and determination. They came close to equalizing on two occasions, with Kynjai Marthong heading a free-kick just wide and Shelbikstar Marngar’s shot taking a deflection and going astray.

The second half witnessed end-to-end action as Rangdajied United sought to extend their lead while Khliehmawlieh continued their search for an equalizer. Both teams had their opportunities, but a combination of solid defending and missed chances kept the scoreline unchanged.

At halftime, the Meghalaya Football Association (MFA) took the opportunity to recognize the efforts of the associations affiliated with them. Cheques of Rs 2 lakh each were handed out to all the associations for organizing local leagues in their respective areas, highlighting the MFA and State Government’s commitment to strengthening football infrastructure across all districts and creating a pathway to success.

In a short speech, MFA President Larsing LD Sawyan expressed gratitude to the Government of Meghalaya for their continuous support in making the Meghalaya State League possible. The government has been fully funding the league since its inaugural edition in 2017-18, ensuring its growth and success.

Aside from the championship trophy, financial rewards were also presented to the participating clubs. Rangdajied United FC received Rs 5 lakh as champions, while Khliehmawlieh Youth Club, the runners-up, were awarded a cheque of Rs 3 lakh. Additionally, clubs that qualified for the MSL received Rs 1 lakh each, with the semifinalists receiving an additional Rs 1 lakh.

Individual achievements were celebrated during the closing ceremony as well. Donlad Diengdoh of Mawlai SC was honored with the Golden Boot for being the top scorer of the tournament, having netted an impressive 15 goals. Banshanlang Sten of Rangdajied United FC was recognized as the best goalkeeper with the Golden Glove award, while the Golden Ball for the best player went to U-21 sensation Tremiki Lamurong, further highlighting Rangdajied United’s outstanding campaign.

The grand finale was graced by the presence of esteemed dignitaries, including Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar, Adviser to the Chief Minister Hamletson Dohling, Additional Chief Secretary Dr. P Shakil Ahammed, Deputy Commissioner of East Khasi Hills RM Kurbah, Secretary of Sports and Youth Affairs R Sohkhlet, ex-MLA and former India international Eugeneson Lyngdoh, senior members of the Meghalaya Football Association, and representatives of the affiliated district sports associations.
