Despite the existing infrastructural challenges in the state, the Meghalaya government is actively working towards hosting the National Games in March 2025. The ambitious plan requires the state to expedite the development of crucial infrastructure and facilities within the next two years.

During the annual general meeting of the Meghalaya State Olympic Association (MSOA), Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Shakliar Warjri expressed the government’s commitment to preparing for the National Games. “We are making all efforts to hold the games in 2025,” stated Warjri, who also serves as the president of MSOA.

Warjri informed the media that a review meeting on the Games’ preparations had already taken place, with another one scheduled in the near future. He stressed the need for periodic evaluations of the state’s infrastructure readiness and other essential aspects.

While Meghalaya has already submitted its bid to host the National Games, there are other states ahead in the hosting queue. After the 36th National Games in Goa, Chhattisgarh and Uttarakhand will host the 37th and 38th editions, respectively. Meghalaya is in line to host the 39th National Games.

During the AGM meeting, ten agendas were discussed, including the annual audit report of the association. An auditor has been appointed for the 2023-2024 period. The meeting also addressed amendments made to the India Olympic Association (IOA) manual.

The Sports and Youth Affairs department is extending support to athletes representing the state in non-Olympic sports such as arm wrestling and Muay Thai. Minister Warjri mentioned the department’s recent outreach to Muay Thai athletes who will be participating in an international event in Thailand.

Furthermore, the department intends to tackle the shortage of coaches and physical instructors in various districts of the state. Efforts will also be made to improve sports infrastructure throughout Meghalaya, including the establishment of athletic tracks in Ri-Bhoi and West Jaintia Hills.

The Meghalaya government’s determination to host the National Games in 2025 reflects its commitment to promoting sports and providing a platform for athletes to showcase their talent on a national stage.
