Lamabam Nilam Devi Sets New Junior National Records at Asian Junior Weightlifting Championships
In a stellar display of strength and skill, 20-year-old Indian weightlifter Lamabam Nilam Devi (born on June 10, 2004) shattered records and secured three silver medals in the Junior Women’s 55kg category at the Asian Youth and Junior Weightlifting Championships. Her remarkable performance saw her set two junior national records and match an iconic senior national record held by Olympic medalist Mirabai Chanu.
Nilam started her campaign by lifting 86kg in the snatch, breaking the junior national record and equaling Chanu’s senior national record set at the 2022 Singapore International. This lift not only showcased her exceptional talent but also signaled her emergence as a rising star in Indian weightlifting.
Building on her momentum, Nilam delivered a solid performance in the clean and jerk category, lifting 104kg—just 2kg shy of setting a new junior national record in this segment. With a combined total of 190kg, she smashed the junior national record for the overall category, bettering her personal best by 4kg.
