Indian weightlifter Jeremy Lalrinnunga competed in the Asian Championships on Sunday but failed to register an overall total as he was unable to lift the weight in any of his three clean and jerk attempts. Despite this setback, the 20-year-old managed to secure a silver medal in the snatch event with a personal best-equalling lift of 141kg in the non-Olympic 67kg weight class.

This was Jeremy’s first tournament since winning the gold at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, but he struggled to find his form throughout the competition. Out of his six attempts – three in snatch and three in clean and jerk – Jeremy was only able to lift the barbell twice.

“I don’t know what happened today. It was just bad luck,” Jeremy said after the event. “After two failed attempts in clean and jerk, I went for the national record. I have lifted 168kg several times in training but today it was just not my day.”

Jeremy’s failure to lift the weight in any of his clean and jerk attempts meant that he was the only one out of the 12 lifters in the field who did not finish his event. Despite this disappointment, Jeremy remains determined to bounce back from this setback.

The Mizo lifter is returning from a thigh injury that saw him miss last year’s World Championship, and he looked rusty from the beginning of the competition. China’s He Yueji claimed the gold medal with a total lift of 320kg (147kg+173kg), while local favourite Lee Sangyeon (314kg) and Uzbek lifter Ergashev Adkhamjon (312kg) took home the silver and bronze medals, respectively.

Jeremy’s performance at the Asian Championships may not have gone as planned, but he has shown that he has the potential to compete at the highest level in weightlifting. With hard work and dedication, Jeremy will undoubtedly bounce back and continue to make a name for himself in the sport.

For those who are interested in following the Asian Weightlifting Championships 2023, live streaming of the event will be available on the Korea Weightlifting Federation’s YouTube channel

However, it is worth noting that there will be no telecast of the event on any TV channel in India. This means that fans of Indian weightlifters like Jeremy Lalrinnunga will have to rely on the internet to catch the action as it unfolds. Nevertheless, the availability of live streaming ensures that fans from all around the world can still support their favorite lifters from the comfort of their own homes.
