The 9th edition of the Capt. N. Kenguruse MVC Memorial Football Tournament commenced in a grand ceremony today at Indira Gandhi Stadium, Kohima, celebrating the legacy of a true national hero and bringing together football enthusiasts from across Nagaland.
The opening ceremony was graced by Neiphiu Rio, Chief Minister of Nagaland; Mr. Neiselie Kengurüse; President of Nagaland Football Association Mr. Neibou Sekhose; Mr. Roko Angami; and Abhijit S Pendharkar, Lt. Gen., AVSM, YSM, General Officer Commanding Spear Corps.
The tournament is organized annually by the Indian Army and Assam Rifles in collaboration with the Nagaland Football Association to honor the supreme sacrifice and indomitable spirit of Neikezhakuo Kenguruse, Maha Vir Chakra (MVC), who laid down his life during the Kargil War.
Honouring a Legend
Twenty-six years ago, on June 28, 1999, Captain Kengurüse from Nerhema village led the Ghatak Platoon of 2nd Rajputana Rifles during Operation Vijay in the Drass sector. In extreme conditions at 16,000 feet and -10°C, he displayed unmatched bravery by climbing barefoot up a cliff face to neutralize a heavily fortified enemy position at Black Rock. Even after sustaining grievous injuries, he eliminated four enemy soldiers before making the ultimate sacrifice.
For his extraordinary gallantry, leadership, and devotion to duty, Captain Kengurüse was posthumously awarded the Maha Vir Chakra — India’s second-highest military honor. His courage continues to inspire generations, embodying the spirit of “Facta Non Verba — Deeds, Not Words.”
Football as a Bridge Between Forces and People
Lt. Gen. Abhijit S Pendharkar, in his address, highlighted how this tournament is not only a tribute to a hero but also a bridge between the armed forces and the people of Nagaland.
“Football, like military service, demands discipline, teamwork, perseverance and the courage to face adversity. These are the same values Captain Kengurüse stood for. Through this tournament, we honor his legacy and inspire young Nagas to strive for excellence.”
The tournament, running from October 22 to November 6, will see teams from across the state compete, not just for the trophy, but for pride, passion, and perseverance.
The opening ceremony also featured the launch of the tournament theme song, unveiling of trophies, and a comic book narrating Captain Kengurüse’s heroic story.
