The courts in Gangtok have crowned their new royalty. The 34th Sikkim State Badminton Championship has concluded after five days of intense action, showcasing a thrilling display of talent from across the state and highlighting a new generation of shuttlers ready to take the lead.
The finals, held at the Paljor Stadium Complex, were a treat for the packed audience. In the most anticipated clashes, Ashim Chettri from the Badminton Association of Namchi (BAN) clinched the coveted Men’s Singles title, while Anisha Rai demonstrated her dominance by winning both the Women’s Singles and the Women’s Doubles alongside her partner Sharika Rai.
The event wasn’t just about the senior players; young talent shone brightly throughout the tournament. Biswanjali Subba was a standout performer, securing a remarkable double by winning both the Under-17 and Under-19 Girls’ Singles titles. Meanwhile, Prabal Pradhan also made headlines, winning the Under-15 Boys’ Singles and then teaming up with Aditya Thapa to win the doubles title for Namchi.
Government and BAS Vow Support for Sikkim’s Shuttlers
The closing ceremony saw enthusiastic support from state officials, led by Chief Guest and Soreng-Chakung MLA, Mr Aditya Golay. He praised every participant for their dedication, reminding them that reaching the finals already makes them winners.
“Sikkim’s sporting fields have grown tremendously since 2019, enabling our athletes to secure representation at both national and international platforms,” Mr Golay remarked, assuring continued government backing. He also lauded the Badminton Association of Sikkim (BAS), under President Mr Jacob Khaling, for its successful grassroots approach, which has ensured players from every corner of the state get a chance to compete.
This commitment from both the government and the association points towards a brighter future for the sport in the state, promising more opportunities and better infrastructure for budding athletes.

A special highlight of the evening was the ‘Promising Player Awards,’ which recognized five young shuttlers who showed exceptional potential. Prayag Dhamala, Prezuel Subba, Chewang Thinley Tamang, Dolma Sherpa, and Dichen Ongmu Sherpa were honoured for their dedication and skill.
This initiative, sponsored in memory of late parents by Mr Meraj Pradhan, drew loud applause and underscored the focus on nurturing the next wave of champions.
